I don't remember a time when people were hating on Halo... Maybe it was before I had access to my parent's computer and started finding video game news sites.

In Halo's defence, the way they handle it is quite nice. They completely change it instead of keeping it exactly the same. What is everyone's biggest gripe about CoD? It never changes. It's the same game every time. Halo doesn't do that because it changes almost everything.
