Yes! A friend of mine had one in university about 5 years back. Cheapest interior on the planet, though it did drive all right.
I always thought that the new S class’ biggest flaw is the kitsch written out “Mercedes-Benz” on the bottom of that silly steering wheel. I could live with the wheel, just not with that stupid writing. Also, screens are ridic. But I think we’ll get used to them.
Also massive recalls and warranty claims on the Bangle 7 and 6 Series right out of the gates. I know several affluent people that bought either and then quickly vowed to never drive BMWs again. I think those cars are one of the reasons Audi did so well and entered the Merc/BMW premium segment race in that era.
It didn’t help that the car in which this application is most common in, the X5 xDrive35i also revved way too high and lacked any top end power. This meant that owners would actively try and shift for themselves (at least those who hadn’t figured out that letting your foot off the gas a bit would make the autotragic…
I’ve gone through this exact thought process. I’ve also had it slam in park while backing up with the door open. But before I’d attempt the manual up/down shift I’d always kind of push left to make sure it’s in steptronic mode. Anyways, now all of my cars are manual again so no stress here.

To be fair, the Germans don’t always make a good interior. Just spend some time in a new non-M BMW 3 Series. It’s crap. This is especially surprising since I regard the 5 and 6 Series interiors as some of the best on the planet.

I read his blog and it’s actually insane how much of a petrol head he’s been from the very beginning. He just revamped a section on his blog titled “cars” where you can now scroll through his history.
