I agree, that's the game's biggest weak point. The digimon take a considerably long time to raise, and when they die (which is often, towards the later stages of the game), it's back to square one.

Weird is certainly an operative word. The whole game had an aura of weirdness about it, the dialogue in the game can certainly be quirky at times.
