It did change the on track product in a big way, though. The chase made everyone take “checkers or wreckers” to heart because that became the season layout. The Chase was the precursor to stage racing.

A lot worse is done and said on those fields. This was overkill for something very minor. Maybe suspend the coach or the involved players for a game. Putting them on the outs for something that happened off field is too much.
