The V first flew in 2015, F16's were being called Vipers long before that.

Viper is the unofficial name that just stuck with the F-16 over the years. Kind of like how Aardvark stuck with the F-111 (it never received a proper name), or Warthog with the A-10 Thunderbolt II.
