His arrest-by-angry-mob isn’t just darkly funny, it would be a damn right heroic scene totally out of place in the story otherwise. It would seem so satisfying to viewers unfamiliar with the story that it would feel fake and out of place.

I think the McMartin Preschool Trial and the larger Satanic Panic of the 80s/90s is definitely ripe for a really in-depth exploration.

When I saw the header, I was ready to add the McMartin trial to this list. Glad it was included. That was a seriously fascinating event and really deserves a strong retelling for our era of surging Christian fundamentalism, conspiracy thinking, and social-media-fueled moral mobs.
