I’m hoping for a good movie - still think Levi was a great choice - but it really is one of those properties made up of pure, unironic wish fulfillment and joy. I think the character may just be too inherently dated to work outside of camp or satire. It’s a little like The Phantom in that way.

Did you not read First Thunder? One of my favorite comics ever done.

I didn’t so much want to be Captain Marvel, as I would have liked to have my own Council of Elders giving guidance from an RV.

I really liked the Multiversity and Convergence stories, featuring the Big Red Cheese.

I loved that show as a kid. I hope the movie will be at least half as good.

Is anybody else kind of pissed off that Captain Marvel can’t be Captain Marvel anymore? Shazam’s the old bearded dude, dammit! Captain Marvel just SAYS “Shazam!”

Jeez, I’m seeing a lot of cynicism so far on here. Am I one of the few people who still believe in the value of playing with toys?

I bought my daughter (born in 2003) toys when she was growing up and we played with them together. It helped I worked in toy stores the first 3 years of her life and could get them at a

I love his story about giving Arnold Schwarzenegger shit about the maid’s child looking like him (before Tom knew) and Schwarzenegger having to tell him to stop it.

“I’m kinda surprised he didn’t settle somewhere as a radio host because he is low-key funny, shockingly honest, and seemingly earnest.”

And that is the first time Tom Arnold has ever been described as “low-key” anything.

Definitely agree. Guru is hyped because of the classic production he had. Basically He had the Lebron of Production supporting carry him while Guru like Ilgauskas. Look how classic M.C.s like Scarface, Nas, Jay, Biggie murder tracks. Even modern day Prhyme and ASAP Ferg tracks show how Premo always blesses.

I still find it unbelievable that within the last 25 years I’ve actually come to find Tom Arnold a likable figure.

This looks really good. Those excerpts are fantastic. I wasn’t aware NYRB published comics.

never in my life i have ever bought something to preorder online so quickly after reading a review of something i had never heard of 4 minutes before.

This looks stunning, and I was completely unaware of it. Thanks for pointing it out and for doing such a good job of it. It’s nice to get actual analysis of the effectiveness of art and storytelling technique in a comics review...I find it’s incredibly rare on these Univision sites.

I think Batman and Superman are present enough in modern culture that they can have more flexibility with the characters than less-established (outside of comics, that is) characters. Sort of like Spider-Man. Those three, in particular, I think they can make movies presuming fans will know about their origins, or at

Agreed 100%. If Guru hadn’t had Premier’s beats, no one would have paid attention. Same goes for Group Home.

Jesus the first post I read and it absolutely identifies why I don’t particularly find Gang Starr all that compelling. I recognize that they’re a good group, but I never found their beats all that great and ditto on MC Guru.

DJ Premier is great but I felt like, on a lot of the Gang Starr work, he would work out a great 20-30 seconds of music and then just loop it for the rest of the song.

I imagine that, unless it does really well, Warner Brothers will just take the Wonder Woman movies and just turn off the lights and close up shop on the rest of it.

I had much the same reaction to Gang Starr. I can totally understand the appeal, and enjoyed a few of their singles, but it just never fully got there for me. Like you, I was also unable to get past a bit of their attitude, and for me it was their need to interject the idea of their understanding of ‘jazz’ into
