Exactly, the combat was crap. Turn based was a relic of its time given machine limitations vs. Scope and Scale. It's unnecessary now and can be ditched.

I think its because you can level multiple jobs - so they offer multiple ‘lower level’ quests for when you start out a new job on the same character. Either that, or I’m doing something wrong...

Doubtful, they operate on a principle of gradual upgrade as to keep the game as widely playable as possible, so that even people with dog PCs can play for a long time before having to upgrade.
