“Native American here. These names are ok.”
“Native American here. These names are ok.”
Still trying to drum up controversy where none exists I see. Keep at it then, I guess. Maybe, eventually, you will come up with something actually wrong. Or, someone will actually care.
This might be the dumbest thing complained about I’ve ever seen.
this is practically the platonic ideal of cultural appropriation.
really. your problem is cultural appropriation.
You whine to much. So sorry your feelings are hurt from those evil names of the school.... boohoo. Gizmodo has gone way down hill in the past couple of years, putting out nothing but whiny bulls***, reposting articles and obvious paid publications....
Social Justice Warriors unite! Destroy all fun! Find racism and hatred in everything.
Why are you bitching about something Native Americans might not have a problem with? Some commentators are Native American in origin and they don’t care. Why are you being offended in their place? Honestly, the only thing I don’t like are the names themselves, besides Thunderbird, that’s pretty badass.
Similar to my thoughts. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. I really like the idea of American wizarding roots being in Native American culture and history. But it seems difficult to do that without white guilt or social justice warriors saying you are pandering to them or trivializing them.
I wasn't aware that I had to get anybody's permission to not feel bad about something.
So let me get this straight - if JKR writes about magic in North America and includes American Indian content, that’s cultural appropriation. If she writes about magic in North America and does not mention American Indian content, that’s cultural imperialism, oppression, and silencing against native peoples. I guess…
Nah, it’s just you.
Hah. Go fuck yourself.
You should, because to think they have any reason to feel bad is idiotic. You know what doesn’t help Native American culture? Pretending it doesn’t exist. You know what NOT using any Native names or imagery does? Pretends we don’t exist.
Oh No Rowling used Native American Mythology in her books set in America!
Wouldn’t using these names actually mean that we’re acknowledging the importance of Native Americans - that the magical culture of America never tried to erase them but instead actually lifted them up?
“Cultural appropriation”?
Uh, it’s called fiction. As in none of these are real, so who the hell cares what JK Rowling calls them?
Native American here. These names are ok.
I think when all is said and done, we will have JKR to thank for two things: 1) Sparking interest in reading among young people again 2) Keeping the professionally outraged occupied
