This isn't quite the same, but people might also want to check out ActiveInbox, which is a Firefox/Chrome plugin that sits on top of gmail's web client: [www.activeinboxhq.com]

Ditto, although I don't do it to reduce clutter. I do it because I then have one easy location for manuals. Where possible, I'll also add driver executables and/or ISO images to my notes (but this requires a premium evernote account).

Everything sucks (or is wonderful) because it requires NTFS. There are many things in the world that are not NTFS, and many things that are not windows. So, if you have a mixed environment, Everything is useless. :)

Ghostery FTW. After reading the developer's replies to addon reviews (at the mozilla addon install page), I'm not impressed.

This. Seriously, if you get too many notifications, trim them down. Even your mail notifications can be trimmed, without having to turn them off completely; with gmail, for example, you can have only the "important" messages interrupt you.

If all you want is media management, then any of the programs mentioned here will work. I happen to like mediamonkey, but other programs can work, too.

Growl isn't just for OS X. There is Growl for Windows, which actually interoperates with OS X Growl.

(deleted, I'm an idiot for replying to a dead thread.)

Also, for people who want to learn (a little) more about cars and maintenance, go to cartalk.com and listen to the radio show (which, surprisingly, is also often available on these things called "radio stations" — check your local listings ;-). Cartalk is also on itunes as a podcast.

Next time you're in an unfamiliar area, go to cartalk.com and click on their "mechanics files" link. That's a place where people submit, rate, and/or review their mechanics.

I agree, except for the "change oil every 3000 miles" part. Unless you're driving your car under "harsh conditions" (*see below), changing it every 5000 miles (maybe even 6000) is fine. While it certainly doesn't hurt to change the oil more often, it's often unnecessary, it costs you more time and money, and it's

Can we start a pool on what he loses next month?

"Superautomatics" FTW! With my espresso habit, I'll have paid off my (lower-end) automatic espresso maker in around 6 months. It only grinds the beans that it needs, and dispenses only the amount that I'm going to drink. Nothing wasted. And I can use whatever espresso beans that I like.

Seconded, especially #1 and #3. Even DIY oil changes can be significantly more expensive. Many luxury cars require synthetic oil. At $6-$8/quart, and needing maybe 7 quarts, just the cost of the oil can be a surprisingly unexpected expense.

Lots of good info here. One more comment, make sure you get a home inspection from a GOOD, reputable inspector. For horror stories, go and watch an episode or two of Holmes Inspection (sorry, US and Canada): [www.hgtv.com] (US — I think there's a different URL for Canadians)

As cool as this is, it really looks like a solution looking for a problem.

The food might fight back?

Buzzword compliant, not approved. :)

Extensions work fine, here.

While there are lots of reasons to hate FF, FF10 is the first version that supposedly fixes the extension borkage with each new release. While addons may break when upgrading to FF10, once you have FF10, addons that do not use non-portable binaries will be assumed to be compatible with future versions of FF. The one
