It’s a defense pact. I wouldn’t be too concerned about Montenegro invading anyone. And if they did, Article 5 wouldn’t apply, anyway.

I really think (and hope) it’s all gonna end up being a kabuki dance between Putin and Erdogan.

Didn’t you get the memo? Every last Syrian either 1. supports Assad, 2. is in al-Qaida, or 3. is in Daesh. There are no innocents.

Agreed.

Fail to see how “going up north” means attacking Daesh, though, when they’re only attacking people near the NW border who haven’t seen a Daesh fighter in their lives.

NATO membership for Ukraine wasn’t an option before the Russian invasion or “intervention” or whatever you want to call it...but the option has only now become incredibly popular among a majority of Ukrainians, thanks to Putin’s aggression.

Oh, I understood that you did not mean to offend me. I was only upset that you thought I was comparing the two in that way. I would never do such a thing.

Props for the username, though. I have never, anywhere, had somebody create an anonymous account just to target me specifically. I take it as a badge of honor. Cheers to you, UpyoursPhil! I raise a kvass to you!

Well they might be Russian. There are a lot of Russians who come around here and post in English to try to push propaganda.

Oh boy. I am sorry! You must be Czech. I did not mean to compare the people of Czechoslovakia (who opposed the Soviet invasion nonviolently) to those of the Crimea (many of whom supported the Russian invasion). You have a lot to be proud of, Havel, Kundera, and Dubcek being heroes — and the lack of reaction from

Not what I was responding to.

I suppose my Cold War soul wants to give the Kremlin the benefit of the doubt and say Putin has some evil plan to hide all his superweapons but I suspect it’s a little bit of both, along with another aspect. First, the Russians in the Russo-Georgian war discovered that their logistics train had atrophied quite a bit

Ahh, yes. And how convenient it was that after Paris happened, the Kremlin immediately jumped on the ISIS bandwagon and finally admitted that a bomb had brought down the Metrojet flight. After Paris, they couldn’t admit it fast enough. See their reticence before, though. Everyone but the Russians and Egyptians blamed

It’s so hilarious how all these anonymous accounts are jumping in “What, Russia? Russia invade someone?? No way.”

Ahhh, yes, “I as an American”. Leave it to the Russian sock puppets to be so sensitive whenever you criticize Putin to immediately jump in with their opinions “as a fellow American” as to why you should love Russian policy and hate your own.

Well, that, and the idea that all Islamists are inherently evil. There are such things as moderate Islamists.

Well, in a literal sense, yes; but it would also get flattened by a mass of inaccurate Russian cruise missiles.

C’mon now. Could Russia have rolled to Kiev militarily? Sure. But what would that accomplish? Putin was smart enough to only invade the areas where there were actual ethnic Russian majorities. He’s hated now in western and central Ukraine, and Russian tanks in Kiev would’ve been a disaster for the modern Ukrainian
