Here’s the thing about nicotine vaping: let’s assume for a minute that 5 decades down the line, we will know for a fact that indeed, vaping is MUCH less harmful to human cells than any form of tobacco smoke. That would make these things one of the most brilliant smoking cessation products ever invented. I’ve witnessed

purportedly less-harmful substitute

Yes, it is good actually to be completely unchanged and pointlessly bitter for two decades. That is how to live.

This means so much to me and anyone else I’m sure who read this and is in recovery. Thanks for taking the time to respond, it honestly made my day.

Listen, we don’t cotton to this kind of thoughtful, polite response ‘round these parts. This is the Internet, lady. /s

I apologize to you—and/or anyone else in the thread—for my narrow and reflexive negativity. My original comment was a reflexive projection of my own recovery experience vis-à-vis the broader, outdated, moralistic, draconian “all or nothing” recovery culture. Thank you for providing a more nuanced, empathetic, and

Thank you! People are individuals, what’s best for one may be terrible for another and vice versa. Slapping a name on a behavior and calling it “textbook” doesn’t mean it can’t work out for the best. My wife and I met in recovery and have been together 17 years.

yes, I think there’s been a lot of deliberate misdirection around addiction being solely the responsibility of the addict, when in reality this should be a community responsibility. Instead it falls only on the addict and their immediate support network, who hopefully reflect back the worth us addicts often don’t see

Or maybe Mulaney's marriage is none of our business?

You have no actual experience or knowledge of his relationship with his ex-wife and commenting on it as you though you know the inner workings is extermely weird behaviour.

as someone in recovery and having seen the successes and failures of so many people in my recovery meetings, people aren’t textbooks and most of the ideas around addiction are quickly losing merit. especially as we learn how dangerous the purist/disease model and all the “red flag projections” baggage it carries with

I went to rehab for cocaine as well, I’m approaching a year and I’ve basically had to reduce a lot of things in my life that feel like I’m performing for people (work events, stepping down from roles in friends weddings, summer BBQ’s, dates). I can’t imagine being a literal a performer struggling with cocaine abuse.

I’m still reeling from this one.  Addiction is a daily struggle, I hit 25 years clean this past June and still there are times I struggle with it.

Sometimes it gets hard to remember, but at the time, the gay representation in The Wire was a huge deal. It says a lot that things that were groundbreaking representation-wise even 10, 15 years ago seem archaic and quaint now.

It’s still a big deal to have a major character that is both gay and non white. There was a

*shrug* I don’t believe anything anyone says about anyone else in the middle of a custody battle. My ex and I are on great terms & are very good friends, but when we were in the middle of the post-divorce custody fight, we got nasty. We’ve apologized to each other profusely, but there’s nothing like “You aren’t taking

I dunno about everyone else, but when I was a kid, and school was finally done with for the day and it was time to unwind and enjoy myself, the last thing I wanted was some jackass trying to make me think about school again.

I don’t know about your kid but for me school sucked and the last thing I wanted to do when I left it was think more about it and how it was going to suck tomorrow and the next day and for many hundreds of days before I could finally be rid of the foul place.

Just to give a bit more detail on Semmelweis: he was actually attacked as being anti-scientific. Scientists of his time had developed complicated and quite appealing theories about all the different things that could cause disease following childbirth, whereas Semmelweis insisted that it was virtually ALL the result
