I stopped watching Scandal about a year ago, the B-613 plot line had jumped the shark and I couldn’t handle it anymore. Glad to hear that the show still has its thoughtful, relevant moments.

nvm
Even if you were reading it correctly and she was tired of reading about boys and dogs separately, you read an entire article about a black girl trying to help other black girls by sending them books with protagonists that reflect them and that’s all you got out of it? What about the dogs?
That’s not an election year, but YEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!
So Carly Fiorina and the rest of the GOP will be apologizing for spreading dangerous lies?
She said she didn’t want to read books about white boys and their dogs. But the real crime is that you were forced to feel :( Please keep telling us about how Black girls needing to see positive representations in literature is about you. I’d really like to hear more.
IDK about this particular little girl, but having been a Black girl - I always thought White folks were overly obsessed with their pets. Dog as man’s best friend is not accepted across all cultures. Animals are nice and all, but hardly interesting as fictional characters. Additionally, it must be irritating as fuck to…
The Friendship, The Gold Cadillac, and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, all by Mildred D. Taylor. Granted, I’m well into my thirties, so I guess they’re a bit old.
I feel like most popular children’s books with black girl protagonists are historical books (about slavery or the civil rights movement), and while those topics are undoubtedly very important, it’s like... Being black isn’t the only thing that black girls have to offer. And don’t even get me started on the white…
The point is that dogs are seen as more deserving protagonists for children’s books than black girls. There’s nothing wrong with reading about dogs (I loooooooove dogs). But there’s a problem when so many authors are seeing them as more relatable than black human girls.
Katniss (Hunger Games) wasn’t written as white, but she was cast white in the movies, obvs.
I love her and her glasses and her earrings and her happy face and her miiiind.
Marley 4-ever.
‘Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry’ was a favourite for me as a nine year old... I remember other books by Ann Rinaldi, like ‘Hang a Thousand Trees With Ribbons’ and ‘Wolf By The Ears’. They all had black or bi-racial girl protagonists.
Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler FTW
Bless their hearts. They tried real hard. Instead they just looked like this:
I have a 4-year-old. Her brain is indeed extremely creative, but 95% of what that produces is garbage. Entertaining, delightful garbage, but garbage nonetheless.
Netflix needs a “Stop Trying To Make Me Watch This” function. I’m sure it would elicit valuable data for them.
She has just always struck me as an awful human being, so yeah, not giving this any of my time. I wish Netflix would stop recommending it to me.
Thanks but I’m holding out for Mother Jones’s Progressive Soda Club. January's selection is Mr Pibb - the male feminist ally soda that lets you know men care about equality too!
