Every final fantasy before 13 had towns you could run around an explore, completely with alleys with no actual purpose other than to make it feel like a town, plus an open world to run around. Honestly FF14 is the true next entry in the series after 12 I look at the 13 trilogy as a dark stain on the series as a whole. The ARR story albeit fed through an MMO wrapper is a very worthy FF story.
