Some art styles lend themselves to too much similarity in facial structure, so you need some sort of visible indicator as to who is who.

I know your comment is made in jest, but as a fan of anime, it makes me a little sad to see tentacles as the go-to joke when anime is referred to outside select circles. I'm saddened mostly because there's an overabundance of other ridiculous-at-best-just-plain-insane-at-worst stereotypes that need a good ribbing.
