The next time someone tells you Blue Lives Matter is a misguided, stupid slogan, show them this.
Last week, a video of Rodney Kim Jr. being kicked, beaten, and jumped on in his high school football team’s locker…
Children and bicycles on the move are just the sorts of things that make me turn my head even if there is a camera available. Even the wide angle lenses I’ve used do not adequately capture all the other stuff coming in from the sides.
It’s like a damn miracle that the human species survived 132 years without a backup camera being mandatory.
That does sound like an Uber AI. It saw someone in its way, but was like fuck them Imma doing my thing here no matter what. How is that not Uber’s philosophy?
Having to contend with Uber employees on Muni and Bart during the morning and evening commute I can see how this can happen- everyone else is invisible to them and I don’t see why the things they program would be any different.
That would take too long, and get in the way of Uber doing whatever the fuck they want.
Driving for over 30 years, the only accidents (2), have been the other drivers fault. Both of them ticketed.
I’m 100% with you there. I get that it can be useful but it also gives people another reason to pay attention less.
FWIW, I am with Kristen on this one. While it would be foolish to fail to use the camera when you have it, I think that you should use the camera and look, both in your mirrors and by turning your head. Neither your eyes nor the camera is perfect, using both will be a little safer than using only one of the two.
Agreed - but most don’t use it as an additional tool, they rely blindly (pun intended) upon it. Adding safety features is almost always a good idea, but sometimes, it’s too much. If you have to have your car automatically brake and let you know when you are changing lanes, you probably shouldn’t be driving.
A guy backed into me in a parking lot and blamed his backup camera for the accident. He said he didn’t see me in it and admitted he didn’t even turn and look to confirm. The insurance company didn’t cut him any slack either. My wife’s car has a camera, and while nice, I still look at those quadrants it can’t see.
Most factory mirrors that I’ve seen don’t have a wide enough view to eliminate blind spots. You can’t simply adjust your way out of the fact that the mirror can’t see everything.
If I know VW ‘doing it right’ will quickly devolve into “shit my rear view camera no longer works”.
And further dumbing down drivers who rely on technology instead of skill and experience.
Furthermore, it is completely stupid that we are now required to pay for this technology. It all stemmed from a person backing over their own child and then going through a local representative to push towards a law. This was all in an effort to deflect how stupid one must feel for running over your own child.
I find the whole perceived “add carbon fiber bits for performance” thing a bit silly, especially on stuff like performance SUVs. I can see maybe the carbon roof that reduces weight by replacing a steel one w/moonroof with a big piece of carbon fiber, but all these little trim pieces being carbon fiber instead of…
