I think you summed Cody up perfectly: sometimes oddly charming and other cloying and pretentious. I don't actively dislike her, but her stuff feels self consciously quirky and over-written sometimes.

My father-in-law did almost this exact thing except for acting, not music. No one directly involved felt that he was justified in abandoning his family for selfish reasons, regardless of his "dreams". Once you have kids to provide for your dreams are secondary to their needs.
