Considering the article says they formed about two million years ago, the farthest they can be is 2 million light years away, but its definitely closer than that. It is trippy to think about how viewing anything in nature is technically looking into the past, but it really hits you in the face through astronomy.

I highly doubt they would make a move to 2 engines if 1 engine x ft off of center of the aircraft can't also support the aircraft. There's a certain amount of redundancy and safety in commercial aircraft you can't sacrifice in the name of SWAP.
