I’m pretty sure there is a setting in the phone to allow it to stay awake for extended periods. I have mine set to stay awake for 10 minutes before locking out.
I also have a widget that blocks all interactions with the touchscreen, so I can slip my phone in my pocket and not have the game accidentally open up any…

I’ve tried this myself, but I like have my headphones plugged in my phone. The headphone jack is on the top of my device, so unfortunately I can’t use this option. Even with my plug being an L-shape.
