I suggested that when I was making $15k/year, I couldn’t afford to buy the clothes I needed to look presentable in a job interview. One person suggested that, rather than blaming the situation for my problems, I should just buy clothes from a store, then return them once the interview is over.

Don’t do this to people who work on commission. Not only will you cost them money with the return, the time they wasted on you could have been spent selling something to a real customer.
