I’m actualy an avid player of ‘the ff mmo’, and sure, you can strike up general conversation with just about anyone. I’m in a Free Company, and I met a couple of people along the way in the field as well.
Where I find that FFXIV and BDO differ, at least up until this point, is that FFXIV never made those meetings seem

I’m loving the no fast travel. It makes it feel like there’s an actual world to traverse.
That being said, I can see how the more time pressed players might find it frustrating to lose that time spent traveling when they’d rather be slaying monsters.

I had the most satisfying MMO experience in a while on Black Desert yesterday. I was questing in the third town (I forget what it is called, Velia?), and there’s a ferry that docks there every now and again. At a certain point curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to hop on.
