You can see ionized trails all night... they are called shooting stars. Vehicles returning from orbital speed do the same. And you can see them from hundreds of miles away.

Quite easy, .... moving at that speed in any atmosphere will ionize it, creating a trail of visible hot gas in the night sky which did not happen.
