She also seems to speak at least three languages in addition to standard, despite there being no way she ever met a Wookie before.

That’s not what I’m talking about, I mean it took Luke until Empire Strikes to be able to move the lightsaber to his hand without touching it.

I’m fine with her being the galaxy’s best mechanic. She takes things apart to eat. All good.
I’m fine with her being a better Falcon pilot than Han after 90 seconds. Luke was a whiney brat who had never been off his home planet and 2 days later was the best pilot in the rebellion. Apparently Star Wars ships have an

not that im arguing with your whole premise here,

“Luke touches a lightsaber for the first time about 45 minutes into A New Hope, and is using the Force pretty brilliantly by the end of the movie.”

I’m sorta in the middle on this, although I agree that I think people who are calling Rey a Mary Sue are bring in a lot of... baggage to say the least.

*Spoilers*

I don’t think the issue is that she was a Mary Sue, or that Finn was a Gary Stu, but that the film had other characters oversell them to the audience as if they were.

I think I have to object to this on the grounds that Rey’s never shown to have any flaws or failures. There’s nothing for her to overcome. Kylo Ren only ever briefly gets the upper hand over her, and these moments are primarily fodder for showing off an even more over-the-top new skill that she has. The closest we get

The problem is the hyper-competence in two of the three heroes (Poe Dameron is just as guilty of this, but it’s easier to explain away because he’s established as the Resistance’s greatest pilot).

The difference is Luke takes two whole movies til he’s able to use the force to move his lightsaber, Rey does it within hours.

I haven’t seen the Force Awakens and I don’t care about it. This being said this article makes her character sound a lot like a pretty typical “mary sue” character. btw, in a new hope Luke sucks at using the Force. All he does is play around with that droid and hitting the hole with his missiles. It isn’t until Return

While I believe Rey’s unfettered competence is a flaw in the film (Luke fails a lot in the original movies), the real question is: do you mind? To me, it’s a problem, but not one that makes me dislike the movie. It has plenty of flaws, but a lot of good to make up for them.

And I can see the argument that it’s
