You can buy some VERY high quality virtual instrument plugins for DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations).

Most offer a virtual keyboard.. some even allow you to play the computer keyboard as a musical keyboard, but both of those are annoying with no velocity sensitivity. Not sure about other apps, but Ableton allows you to use the mouse to click which notes that you want played. if you are spending $200+ on software..…
