For genes to be “active” mRNA would need to be transcribed and then functional proteins synthesised.

By active, the researchers probably mean that the genes are transcribed as mRNA and these translated into functional proteins. Without this process, the genes are to all extents and purposes dormant.

Would individual cells know that the body is dead and beyond recovery or would they just carry on doing their best to continue functions of life.

Genes don’t need to be revived to promote decomposition. The necessary enzymes are already present in the cell, all it needs is to autoload and release the enzymes to decompose.

Hardly, more likely to be a last gasp attempt at reviving life functions.
