The fan service stuff really grew annoying after a while. Having a character from The Simpsons saying a famous punchline from Family Guy and vice versa once is one thing, but doing multiple variations of it was just lazy. Then again, "lazy" is pretty much how you could describe the writing of the entire episode.

I disagree. I've seen almost every episode of the series multiple times, either from first-airings or years of syndication repeats and DVD viewings, and while the later seasons have had their bright spots, the quality has not been as consistenly good as it was early on.
