I actually quite enjoyed Dead Space, and as a side note, the first F.E.A.R.
Dead Space, while still having the hallway crawling, door-unlocking aspects of the REs, it had a bit of an RPG feel, and great fighting/exploring mechanics that kept it feeling novel.

I know what you mean. Resident Evil always struck me as a love letter to horror movies - first George Romero, then John Carpenter - so they always had that sort of B-movie cheese to them.

For me, the SH games were the first (and debatably only) horror games that were truly frightening, and actually interesting. Not just jump-scare, “omg I’m about to use all my ammo and healthpacks” anxiety, that the RE games felt to me. But actual mystery, mythology, genuine otherworldly creepiness nightmares.
