In the book lore, I don't think there's intended to be anything particularly special about the Starks. Most northerners (and wildlings, for that matter) worship the old gods. It certainly seems like destiny that there was a wolf for each Stark child, but given what we know about some characters' supernatural…

I thought the book actually makes it feel even more like Arya's stark identity is dissolving.

I highly doubt either is working for Gus.  It's really not necessary to explain anything in the story.
