In the Los Angeles area West Hollywood gets so much attention in popular culture as the LGBT city that I think most people don't realize that Long Beach has had a long history of a vibrant LGBT community. The cynical part of me wonders if it's because WeHo is very white (LB isn't) and more recently quite wealthy.

Shut up already you fucking racist asshole. You embody mainstream feminism's white supremacy problem.

Many of the most recent legalization of gay marriage have been by state officials refusing to defend in court a ban voters put in place but had been legally challenged.

It wouldn't be the NBA itself but the board of Governors which does contractually have the power to force him to sell. Silver is urging that they do so.

It's because discrimination laws about protected classes do not only apply to one type of business activity but all types of business activities.

Yep. Also a recovering Catholic who still wonders at times if hell is real and if I'm going. I agree that it's the person not the religion in pretty much all cases of incredible good or incredible evil. I'm also sad that instead of talking about trans issues in South Korea, this devolved into another argument about

Yep. That was one of my first thoughts but didn't want people to dog pile me as an apologist. Hoping that if we at least talk about what makes people accepting of trans issues would at least be useful for outreach purposes.

This is definitely what I have concluded. Both the worst atrocities in the world and the greatest social justice triumphs have incorporated religion into them strongly.

Interesting to see the reactions here about this story. This doctor identifies as a Christian and the reaction here is to talk about how much Christians are fucking things up. Which, I mean, they are in the sense that large powerful groups can and will do that. I don't have a lot of sympathy for them or think they're

Christianity took hold in S Korea for multiple reasons. Missionaries from the West clearly started it in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, but a big factor influencing Christianity in S Korea is Japanese imperialism in the 20th century. Embracing Christianity was seen as a reaction of defiance and national identity

I don't think she means lesbians who are feminists, I think she means the type of 70s feminists that are "political lesbians"

I don't think the general non-black latino population, even the "brownest" of us with black friends (you know how that goes), are much better at not using that word than the general white population. It's pretty horrifying, but I have found that so many other POC do not transfer their own experiences of being

Yes, this was what I was thinking of. It's definitely an improvement, not just because it recognizes a man can be raped but because women's sexual assaults don't often fit the narrative that the old definition wants us to see rape as.

I feel you there.

I don't think you are awful or anything. I just felt that speculation had some unfortunate implications. I may have come off strong, but I'm not trying to flame.

If you re-read your first comment it does not come off as just an observation as why so many organizations are headed by white men and it would be nice if this one wasn't, because I can totally get behind that sentiment.

Thanks! I have some issues with the way FBI defines rape, I think it was defined as forced penetration by a penis into a vagina or anus until very recently and now I think they have only broadened it slightly. This definition would reduce the numbers of women's sexual assault quite a bit and a man's sexual assault

Except we know that suffering from one oppression doesn't mean you understand all other oppressions (see: racism in gay people, homophobia in POC, misogyny in gay men).

Would he have gotten it better is he was a black dude or an asian dude? Do they get rape culture better? I'm not really concerned with protecting poor white feelings, but that is a pretty simplistic reduction of what does and doesn't make rape culture. I can totally see suggesting that a woman should head RAINN, as

I think the guy definitely needs to step down, but male rape victims are an unfortunately common thing (think prisons alone). I think the statistic is 1 in 9 boys will be sexually assaulted before age 18, not as high as women but still pretty god damn high. The more uncommon thing (though they obviously exist) is a
