It’s relatively short, but it’s less accessible than the other books. I think it’s common for people to be unsure about the series after The Gunslinger and get pulled in by The Drawing of the Three.
The Gunslinger is good in its way, but its tone is different from the rest of the series. I found it to be more dreamlike and less accessible than everything that follows.
I don’t recall feeling like there was a moral equivalence being made, but maybe I just missed it.
I liked Black House, too. I don’t think the characters of The Talisman grabbed me, so the meandering story felt more slow and pointless than epic.

The series’ flaws bothered me more the first time I read it. I still think there are flaws, sometimes glaring flaws, but they don’t bother me as much anymore.
