No clue. I only know that the 24 hour rule exists because of a law passed by the US Dept of Transportation.
You're correct. However, it's unique: Every other airline chooses to give you a 24 hour cancellation window. So if you buy at AA not knowing it does things differently (as of February, 2014), you're in for a surprise.
*Most airlines* will allow you to cancel/refund tickets 24 hours after purchasing.
You just pop it out. And the rest, you cover it with plastic wrap, which you should be doing anyway.
