Swinton is not trying to learn about whitewashing. She appears to have another motivation. That’s what I’m saying.
Well she spoke about it on a lessor known radio show so “publicize it” is a bit stretchy, but agreeing to keep it private in the first place was the error. It doesn’t take away from the very real problem of Swinton doing that in the first place.
No Cho claimed it was offensive, which it was.
Ah. So electing a man popular with white supremacists, who mentioned his sexual attraction to his own child on more than one occasion and who made fun of the disabled is wholly unconnected to the problems of race, privilege, and discrimination? Yes. I must just be insane to see the connections.
How much more in depth can one become about whitewashing being pervasive and wrong? Especially after one has participated in it.
yup
Well, I didn’t actually do that. In fact, I admitted just the opposite. I constantly bump up against my privilege and feel all the feelings that go with that. This was one of those times.
No.
No. What would she be seeking guidance for here? Seriously. The movie was done. This can’t be seeking guidance about taking the role. It’s not seeking guidance about whitewashing. It’s not about asking if she can take on a role in helping other actors and actresses make better choices.
No. Because you asked BEFORE you acted, you were clearly seeking help. That didn’t happen here. The movie was shot and in the can. What would Swinton possible contact Cho for at this point? She didn’t apologize and say, “You know, I never thought of it as whitewashing until I heard you speak about that. Now, I feel…
Exactly. I hope Margaret Cho appreciates her role as the head of all Asian people. I mean, what about the subcontinent?
Well, sure, then I read the actual emails and so no. It’s pretty obvious what is happening. Also, it happens afterward, not before, right, so Tilda had already taken the role.
That’s tone policing, you know. You feel Cho should just be nicer than about the whole whitewashing racism tall white woman calling her thing. Okay then.
Well, sure, she should have just blown it off. But, you know, it’s kind of hard to say, “Oh, I would totally do this” in life and have that be a real thing. Perhaps in the future, she will simply not answer, which is best. Let the person google or something.
I’m looking but I see nowhere I made this personal. This isn’t about me. This is about treating people like humans and not Asian Google Search.
You are missing the point. There is no question about whitewashing and its implications. Swinton is not an idiot. She clearly knew what was up. What purpose does Call An Asian (tm) serve? Seriously, I want to know. It’s not like they’d talk about it, and Cho would say, “Well, you know, except for what you did, because…
You know, I don’t agree she did misrepresent it. I mean, it’s exaggerated for humor, but essentially, it’s pretty much everything that happened but with “Can you believe this white woman called me?” attached as an interior voice.
I like your last sentence, but I can’t see contacting Cho for any reason besides guilt alleviation. I mean, Cho’s comments are public. She knows where Cho stands. Why call her to discuss it?
