If you want this to last more than a year, I'd recommend building it with teak or ipe. Most woods domestic to the US don't really have good moisture-repelling properties and will rot out pretty quickly.

It would actually work for a minor scratch too. The water will cause the wood to swell and level out. I've used this method on a lot of furniture repairs for clients.
