Most Tesla buyers are former BMW owners.  Other than the drivetrain tech, there is nothing that remarkable about BMW in the luxury department.  This is the market Tesla has captured. 

The only real reason I see this as a thing that needs to be developed is for apartment dwellers without good access to outdoor electrical hookups or renters with leases that don’t allow for electrical modifications to the home.

The problem is disproportionate coverage that creates the incorrect impression that semi-autonomous vehicles—and in particular Teslas—are inherently dangerous in and of themselves.
