Autism *is* a neurodevelopmental disorder. I would not necessarily classify high-functioning “typical” autism as a “disease” but low-functioning “autism with intellectual disability” absolutely is.
Yeah, taking brain biopsies from people purely for research does tend to be frowned upon. That said, taking post-mortem samples from hippocampus, which is also affected in these disorders, and where there still was ongoing adult neurogenesis might be more able to lend insight to pathogenic alterations in the process…
Also as someone who does work in this area, I agree. This study is amazing, particularly the number of samples that they were able to analyze. It’s going to inform studies of the neuropathology of these disorders for decades.
That said, it does have some areas that are important gaps. (Just off the top of my head…

The title is straight up wrong. There was one possible correlation that could easily be explained by the false-discovery rate, AND there were MAJOR issues with one of the control groups. This study found NOTHING.
