All vacation homes are like that. Mostly because they are private businesses that won't be able to find a last minute booking. However, if you pay the extra 25 bucks for Aircover you can always get your money back with travel insurance. 

The only way that could have happened is if you did something wrong. Other than that, you could have canceled within 24 hours of booking if there were hidden fees with no penalty, or longer depending on the cancelation policy.
