OP was mistaken. Meridian streets (where roads change from East-to-West or North-to-South when they cross it) are rarely named “Meridian” and conversely, roads that are named “Meridian” are usually due to the TRS land-grant system rather than their properties as a “Meridian Street”.
as per my post above, this is only commonplace in the western U.S. due to the TRS system of land grants. It’s not a thing anywhere else.
You find that “grid square” set-up west of the Mississippi river because of the TRS System (Township-Range-Section) implemented when the US gov’t started handing out land to settlers. It’s very rare (but does exist) in the eastern half of the country.
