TM is for unregistered trademarks, in most instances people are looking for actually registered designation, but not always. (R) is for registered trademark filed with the federal office. TM still affords rights to the TM (or SM) holder.
Especially because you can slap TM on practically anything and say you are seeking trademark designation.

I had the (un) fortunate luck to have an actual physical store in my nearest mall. So there was a lot of disappointed faces.
