You can’t force an “honor” onto people who don’t feel honored by what you’re doing.

Some Natives are fine with being called Indian, that’s great that they told you that. It’s also fine that a few told you they were ok with Native mascots. I think what you’re seeing here with the controversy is that are are thousands of Natives who are not ok with it.
Yeah, we don’t want to be known as your mascots. It’s killing our children. Who cares that we’re not invisible, when the result is people refusing to see our humanity?
Did that happen in the 90s? I wasn’t aware that people tried to pretend that salsa had never existed pre-1990.
This is just the beginning. End goal for Natives is to eradicate any mention of us as a mascot. Indian, Chief, Brave, etc. Redskins is just the tip of the iceberg.
That’s all you can add to the discussion? Being a condescending asshole?
So you literally had an issue with the “people” vs “peoples”? I bet your friends enjoy it when you correct them all the time.
Yeah, I know what a “people” is. I get that you have quibbles about the punctuation. But that’s your takeaway here? That technically, a “people” can’t be raped and captured, so let’s not talk about how Columbus instituted a monetary system using young Native women as currency because it’s not up to snuff with your…
Thats.... not what’s happening here? “Columbusing” is pretending to discover something that’s existed for ages. Kara is not saying that eating hummus is appropriation, but that pretending hummus is the new “it” food like it’s been recently discovered is ahistorical and shitty, aka “Columbusing.”
So.... Is your argument that since Columbus didn’t personally capture and rape every single Taino or Lucayan, so he shouldn’t be held responsible for creating the system?
Clarification: White women.
I actually forgot the BEST part of this:
I love Sherman Alexie so much. As a mixed-race Native, his books made my awkward finding-myself identity stage a little easier.
Please please please don't every use that! :( As an Inupiat, it's really fucking weird to see people use this phrase they have NO idea what it means culturally. I know you were probably being sarcastic and mocking the crazy HPV girl, but it's pretty offensive and weird to Eskimo people to see that phrase being used.

She just had the baby. Babies can't be vaccinated till they reach a certain age. That's why measles & pertussis outbreaks are so dangerous, because very young infants can be vaccinated till they are older. They rely on herd immunity to be safe.
Thank you!
Hey!
