WHAAAT?
WHAAAT?
You're an asshole. And my culture has been tattooing for thousands of years. When women and men transitioned to adulthood, they were tattooed. It was only through colonization and the whitewashing of our culture and traditions by asshole white people that our practice of tattooing stopped. It's being picked up again…
I think someone else mentioned it, but I wanted to point out:
The thing is, we are complex people, and are capable of caring about different issues in different ways all at the same time.
Actually, the Change the Mascot movement is directed at all Native mascots, not just the Washington football team. That's just where we are gaining traction, and where we are getting started. The Washington team name is the most outright offensive, but when we get that changed, we will most definitely be getting…
But it's not idiotic or silly to our communities. We don't have to pick "either or" to fight the problems plaguing our communities.
From my perspective, and the perspectives from people that I know and love and have spoken to on the matter: Yes, even the logos should change. All Natives mascots and logos should change. Natives shouldn't be a mascot. We aren't a mascot.
Well, as a King Island Inupiat, I can tell you that I find that term offensive. So does my mother. So do my siblings, my uncles, my cousins. My friends who are Lakota find it offensive, my friends who are Navajo find it offensive, my friends who are Yupik, Tulalip, Spokane, Choctaw, Lumbee, Laguna Pueblo, all find it…
But it is also arrogant for one culture to not respect the moral system of the other culture. We're not asking you to adopt our culture. We're not demanding that you perform our ceremonies. We're asking you to respect it. You mentioned in a previous post that "western culture is the most tolerant culture of all." But…
Honestly, you're wrong. But you're going to sit there in your wrongness and be wrong, because as a white man, heaven forbid you actually listen to the perspective of someone who actually comes from this community. But you know what? You'll never have any consequences for your wrong opinions and strange logic because…
We're not imposing our culture on you. In fact, we are asking you not to participate in our culture when you do not understand the significance involved.
I just can't get over the fact that you are comparing the attempted total destruction of our societies and culture, to the fact that in this day, because of that attempted destruction, we want to protect the sacredness and significance of some of the most valuable aspects of our culture.
Oh, don't you worry, I know plenty about Poland's history, because the American education system is incredibly white and Eurocentric. Yet my own history and the history of the 550+ unique tribes in the United States were very rarely, if ever covered.
I think your privilege here blinds you from some of the realities facing Indigenous people in America. I'm coming from a place where, in reading some of your comments in this thread, I'm not sure if you aware of the trauma that Native families are still dealing with today.
Your comments are ridiculous. The small bits of Natives that remain have not been absorbed. We are fighting this battle every day to NOT be absorbed, to keep our sovereignty, and to promote our traditional culture, values and language among our children. So these comments of yours declaring us "dead and gone" are…
Your logic is astounding. How am I a member of the dominant culture when I am a member of a Native nation? What the hell are you talking about?
What the hell are you talking about?
Wait, what? "Elements of their culture borrowed by others"....
Adrienne K has a fantastic blog responding to different events of Native cultural appropriation. This post specifically addresses why it is so offensive (in many ways) to wear a headdress.
