From what I remember, AT&T had subsidized the price of the iPhone, but you still had to pay tax on the full retail value. I was doing the every other 2 generations thing. Last year I found out that that AT&T needed me to buy the phone myself or to pay installments from them or Apple.

One of my C-level friends unfortunately has to take calls on vacation. Given the location/cell coverage, work provides a satellite phone if necessary.
