She’s so awful. I hope this clip haunts her and she is endlessly ashamed of herself. Ellen looks like she’s fighting back tears, but maybe I’m projecting.

This is why I get annoyed when when people criticize her for not doing enough in some way for LGBTQ rights, or for being too bland on the subject.
*runs off to trip down memory lane*
I work in analytics and have had pretty good luck with not dealing with this shit. Even though “data scientists” get most of the headlines, I believe the analytics field is actually about evenly split. So even though a lot of the people getting the headlines are still men, those in the field are much more diverse. …
That Oprah segment with the woman saying that exact line and Ellen’s retort/their back and forth is actually in the first video of the article at about 3:40 into it.
I specifically remember a lady on the Oprah episode standing up and saying something like, “Why make such a big deal about it? I’m not on the cover of Time announcing, “I’m straight!”...” Ellen, not missing a beat, replied something like, “Actually, the people at Time are trying to get in touch with you...” and…
That sucks. I considered teaching, but all of my interests and education are STEM based and I knew the parents would be just as dickish as the CS jerks.
I remember really being unable to get into Ellen’s show before she came out. I wasn’t clear about my own queerness at the time—I thought my lack of interest in boys was because I was a theatre nerd and super focused on getting good grades and getting into college—but I was clear that something about watching Ellen…
As a young newly out queer woman this had such a profound effect on myself and my friends. We had viewing parties for both the puppy episode and her Diane Saywer interview. My parents were havuing a very hard time with my sexuality and seeing Betty stand up for Ellen was soawesome.
I was gonna comment about that. How many of those who went “ew, don’t be gay on my TV” people are now lining up to try and attend one of her tapings?
Younger people may not realize, this was a HUGE deal at the time. Like, the world stopped and watched this happen.
I saw this as a twenty-something and I remember thinking how monumentally courageous this was. I had been watching the show when it was still called “These Friends of Mine”.
I remember the episode airing, and what a big deal it was for my [very closeted] high school friends. I remember fellow classmates being absolutely awful about the show, about Ellen, about having “gayness” forced on them or whatever.
I’m a programmer and a woman. And I’m definitely considering switching fields. It would mean a pay cut but this shit is everywhere and I’m pretty much done.
Agreed, I really hate how he had a corrosive effect on our government. He would constantly rant about the so-called takers wanting “free stuff”. Just look at all he benefited from in his lifetime. From growing up in FHA subsidized Levittown with his dads GI bill benefits and VA mortgage. Benefiting from Robert Moses…
The WSJ is owned by Murdoch. How reputable can it still be?
Agree, absolutely.
If a moderate republican votes in Congress does it makes sound?
That’s the MO of the entire Right Wing media and the complicit GOP.
Among his sins against the American people is how O’Reilly weaponized the ignorance of some in his audience. He help found the current cadre of far-right thought leaders and helped push their ideas to the mainstream.
