Speaking as someone who's worked at an NGO: this kind of thing isn't just a photo-op for the stars. It also brings in attention to this specific charity and brings in donations.

These are all useless because it "cost of living" means nothing if you don't compare it with an income. Yours, if you plan to move there, and the local median income as well. Because you can live fairly well just about anywhere in the world if you earn enough compared to local standard.
