Thankfully there are youth coaches and programs that enforce it. If you get a chance to watch a high level club team at u15 or u16, watch it. Games can be played without punting at all. Maybe there’s a handful of throw ins but they sling 20-30 passes together at the time.

And then they grow older and have no idea how to play actual soccer and their parents wonder why little Timmy isn’t getting a college scholarship and the US can’t field a decent team.

8 year olds are the teams who SHOULD be playing out of the back, even if it results in some bad giveaways, because the games don’t mean anything but learning how to play good soccer does. In fact, if your U-12 or younger league doesn’t have a retreat line for defenders to get behind before goal kicks, it should.
