In the fwiw category, backer rod is available because it is still has a use. Any big box store usually carries 3 sizes. It's primary use is to fill a gap larger than caulk can handle. Stuff in the backer rod to close up the space (between say trim and ceiling) and then caulk over. Caulk has only so much elasticity.
