One mind-trick (non-Jedi) that I use to prevent me from buying shit I don't need is to make a list and then wait to see if I still want that item after a period of time has passed. Usually it's about one week/$20 or week/$40-50 if the item is over $100 (rough estimates). So I'm not allowed to buy that $60 video game

I'm convinced that the greatest personal financial principle is contentment. Followed closely by compound interest. Make them both work in your favor and you'll retire a millionaire.

Heh, reminds me of something I saw today on Twitter:

"In the most simple terms possible, oversteer in when the front wheels slip while cornering and oversteer is when the rear wheels slip while cornering."

If no one has mentioned it yet. #4 has a significant typo.

"It's a relay that switches the light on and off. It blinks faster when a bulb is burned out because the voltage load drops. Less load on the circuit = easier for it to do its job = blinks faster."

I really wish they would expand to allow Tinkering people use a Karma sim in the arduino GSM device so I can buy 1GB of data that will not expire for the little devices I build.

Jason... Words cannot express how proud of you I am.

Don't let your parents get a credit card in your name to build your credit unless you are sure they will they will put a certain amount on it and then cut the card. This happened to me. My parents maxed out a card under my name without my knowledge and now I have a 6K dept that they are making minimum payments on and

We're men. "Like this, but with 4 weeks less hair" is what I go for.

Nice, I didn't know about that one. Although that apple morning alarm sounds terrible. ;)

My (completely untested) hypothesis on diets in the west is that they tend to focus on the meats/proteins as the "main" and vegetables are relegated to "sides" (compared to Asian/Eastern) diets that tend to integrate meat and vegetables into one dish, or at least have a more balanced emphasis in general. For example,

Be gentle with animals

I've never owned an Apple product and I wouldn't be surprised if I never do, but I'm always excited when they have announcements because it provides the market with direction. Apple doesn't come up with everything, but they come up with a lot and know what to do with what they steal.

You must only spend time in certain corners of the internet. Android fanboys are often just as bad. (Though they aren't quite as absurd at Google's events as Apple's fanboys are)

My wife and I had been having this problem for a while. She was working and I wasn't so I was a huge night owl and she wanted to go to sleep early.

And for the love of all that is good and pure, STOP responding to those ridiculous Facebook "games" that say things like "To learn your perfect stripper name, post the name of your favorite gem with the name of the street you grew up on!" because congratulations, the name of the street you grew up on is an incredibly

Not sure about all pets but my cat costs me about $20/month to feed, perhaps $30/month if you include litter and the odd toy here and there. I got her for free and have only spent about $150 in vet bills so far, I estimate her lifelong cost to be $5,550 over a 15 year life span. Pretty awesome compared to

I got a volunteer job at the zoo where I walk around for 3 hours straight twice a week. I love it because it's as totally opposite from my day job (sitting in a chair in a windowless room staring at a computer) as I could possibly get.

The problem is this is a synopsis of a summary article about the actual survey, which itself isn't even all that granular. In the original study they mix daycare (more for kids 0-5 years old, after that it is only summers), private school (only an expense for middle and upper class) and school books & supplies.
