If you pay for the box and lifetime service, you are paying about $800 up front. But then you will be paying about $30 less a month from your cable carrier for as long as you have the TiVo. So 800/30 is about 26 months, or two years to make up the cost difference.

As someone who has had a TiVo for close to 10 years, I can say that it is still the best DVR by far. The intuitive UI, no lag, better guide and other features are so much better than the cable provided DVRs (to be fair, that’s not too hard). Not to mention downloading recorded stuff to my iPhone
