I doubt we're getting the whole story here. I've seen some pretty high end contracts negotiated via email but there were always peripheral discussions happening.
That's interesting - I was just at a salary negotiation workshop for women and they specifically recommended avoiding negotiation during the interview. Secure an offer first, then negotiate.
