Not necessarily, it is pretty common for the radiator to break (where the hoses connect). The list of parts fixed is pretty much the common gripe list of 540is. It is definitely worth it to check out in my opinion. Also check out bimmerforums if you are serious about buying one.

The rear diff from the M5 is not plug and play. They are different size units.

I recently bought a 98 540i with the 6 spd. I agree with almost everything here except the car needs a LSD. So far driven it 12k miles in 4 months and had to replace a couple of coil packs (97k miles). I love driving it and every once in a while I see someone who knows what 540i means.
