Former fast boat guy here. I agree with pretty much everything you said. Sounds like a whiny nub who was overwhelmed by his first patrol. For someone who admittedly doesn’t know much, and is pretty low ranking in the pecking order, seems to jump to a lot of conclusions about parts of the ship he knows nothing about.

He didn’t get a time-out, he got kicked out of the event entirely.. which speaks volumes about these relationships between manufacturers and “journalists”.
If you think about it, he actually got kicked out for being a journalist, instead of the good little lap-dog that manufacturers wine and dine at these events.
